These are some essential tools and tips for every computer user. They're all free!

If you're a Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer user, check for security updates -- always!

If you want a more secure browser, with lots of nifty features IE doesn't have, try Firefox.

Tired of paying $29.95 a year to "update" your anti-virus protection? You want AVG from Grisoft. (Caution: Never run two or more anti-virus programs simultaneously. They may conflict and cause serious problems in your registry. To try AVG, download it. Then DISABLE OR TURN OFF your current anti-virus program. Next, install AVG. If, after a few days, you decide to stick with AVG -- which offers continual free updates forever -- THEN uninstall your current anti-virus program.)

Yes, you must have firewall protection. It's built into Windows XP. But you may still want to get Zone Alarm. Free! (Like anti-virus protection, see above, you only want ONE firewall program protecting you at the same time.)

Websites throw lots of garbage onto your computer which can clutter it and slow it down. To combat spyware and ad-bots, you need AdAware and Spybot. Run them at least once a week.

Windows maintenance? Yes, you have to run ScanDisk and DeFrag. They're included in your Windows system. The first time you run DeFrag, if you've never run it -- can take 8+ HOURS! Always run ScanDisk first. Then run DeFrag. Turn off every other program, start DeFrag, and go to bed. In the morning, it should be done. Afterwards, run DeFrag once a month. It won't take that long, and it'll keep your hard drive happy (and speed up your computer).

Want your computer clock to ALWAYS be correct? Get Atomic Clock Sync.

Love music? Want it free? You'll need a high-speed DSL, cable or broadband connection. Here's the best, spyware-free, adware-free P2P (peer to peer) file-sharing program. Read about it here. Download it here.

Google user? Sure you are. Did you know that Google's cookie stores every search you ever conduct, forever? No, you didn't. That's a lot of info about your interests. Who knows what Google does with it, or to whom they sell it? I don't know. You don't know. Nobody knows. Here's how to anonymize Google's cookie and still enjoy the benefits.

Should you be concerned about Google's cookie? Maybe, maybe not. Here's the other side -- and more facts.

Want to build your own website professionally? DON'T want to buy Microsoft Front Page to do it? Get "Nvu." The complete web authoring system -- FREE! Great for non-profits, churches, clubs, those on a budget. (Look: none of these web-authoring programs are easy. There's always a learning curve. But "Nvu" has all the features of Front Page and then some. It's cross-platform, for one. See what we mean? You'll learn what "cross-platform" means. Learning curve.)

NOT FREE

If serious security of any kind is an issue for you, Steganos offers the best encryption and security software in the world. Protect sensitive files and information. (What you do with it is up to you. This is the software, it was learned, used by terrorists before 9/11. It's that uncrackable -- as long as you choose tough passwords, of course -- which Steganos will help you do.)
